Cherish

heart treeIt’s a silly made-up song. Born, no doubt, in the wee hours shortly after my boy was born. A simple response to a mother’s overwhelming gratitude after years of praying for the bundle snuggling there on her chest.

I sing it before bed sometimes. In the middle of the day when it’s just the two of us. Hum it into his fuzzy head when we’re sitting close.

It’s the right song when we’re laughing for joy. Works just as well after band-aiding knees. That baby boy is just short of 8 years old now, and I’ve sung it hundreds of times. I will sing it with and to him until the day I die.

But this morning, in the silence of a sanctuary, my spirit heard my Jesus sing it over me. And now, I can never be the same.

“Do you know how much I love you? Do you know? Do you know? Do you know how much I love you? Do you know? Do you know? So much — So much. I love you so, so much.”

So sweet. I too sing over my children, and it is such a wonderful thought to think that our God is also singing over us! Thanks!

This is so precious, Beth. I remember feeling the same way when my girls were born many years ago. Yesterday when I finally removed the ornaments from my Christmas tree, the word “cherished” played over and over in my mind as I carefully wrapped each sweet memory in tissue paper and placed in a box. One of my cherished ornaments is the hand made bread dough star you gave to me when you were in my children’s choir. Thanks for sharing your heart.

  3. Absolutely gorgeous. I prayed for years for my babies, too. And I wrote songs for each of them, or rather, God wrote them through me to remind me the love I give my children is just a tiny slice of a mirror of the love he has for all of his children, including me.

    Aww!!!

I have a similar song for my children. I love finding similarities like this on the internet. Motherhood looks different and the same to everyone, doesn’t it?
