Five Minute Friday: Brave

May 3, 2013 by Beth Hess

Views-Clark-Kent-Shirt-RipA lens sneaks open and captures a moment in time. The length of the lag between open and closed can change everything about the outcome.

A boy approaches two others about his age and asks if he can build the fort, too. And it strikes me as one of the bravest acts I’ve witnessed in a long time.

Open. Vulnerable. Naked.
Without excuse. Without apology. Without a superhero cape.

It’s really the only way to be brave. As I heard not long ago, “It’s braver to be Clark Kent than Superman.”

And that’s the heartbeat of Just Be Beth. Because being yourself is the bravest thing you can do.

p.s. as I was looking for photos for this post, this one struck me most. by default we assume he’s ripping open his shirt to become Superman. but maybe, just maybe, he’s closing it back up to be Clark Kent. Brave.
