Little Things DO Matter (Sugar Sober Series)

October 21, 2014 by Beth Hess

That moment when The Holy Spirit calms your restlessness, calls you close, and whispers sweetly, “Good Lord, Beth — Will you just trust me?”

Yeah. That.

It was a fairly benign issue. What music to listen to during Saturday cleaning. I turned on Pandora and went to change the station to something more upbeat. Then I felt a prompt to leave it. Moments later, returning to make a change. Again, He said, No.

THREE TIMES we danced this two-step. Me reaching to change. God holding me back.

Until the question came with the tone of a father playfully rustling my hair as he speaks. Can you please let me have the little things, too?

So I took my hands off the phone, buried them in dishwater, and let the music play.

Only to find myself a couple of hours later with a clean kitchen, a renewed spirit, and a journal page full of song lyrics I knew God was using to speak directly into my life.

I should have known better. I have come to rely on these messages. These interruptions in my normal thought patterns that I know cannot be coming from me.

During the last several weeks, He speaks to me even about my food. Especially about my food.

“That’s enough. Put down your fork.” “Order water, not soda.” “You don’t need rice with that.”

Some like to think God doesn’t worry himself with things like that. The little stuff. That He’s too busy with world issues and more important people.

Truth is: that’s EXACTLY the things God concerns himself with. He concerns himself with the number of hairs on our head and today’s color of our eyes. He concerns himself with the condition of my heart and the way I give it away for a bite of something sweet.

As a loving Daddy teaching his child to walk in new ways, He is careful to point out the hazards, remove the obstacles, and steady my pace. He hems me in behind and before (Psalm 139:5). Like bumpers that cushion the blow of the inevitable falling.

And I trust Him.

Love this, Beth! Yes, sometimes the Holy Spirit is less-than-subtle with me, too. Truth be told, I need it. I can be dense sometimes (and stubborn??)

As I drove back home to the mountains today, I was pressed to turn on a Christian music station. I finally did, and was treated to two messages that completely had me in tears. Thank You, Lord, for speaking to us. We need it.

God is big, but He cares about the small stuff, too.

    GOD BLESS!

Don’t you just love how nothing is too small or too big for Him. I think even more so that small stuff when we wonder why would he bother. But He cares about every detail . . . each one is orchestrated by Him to begin with. Keeping you in my prayers, Beth. Much love. xoxo

That’s a precious reminder. He not only cares about the details, but He’s the very power behind their existence in the first place. How excited He must be when we discover the gifts He has placed all along our path. Thank you, Beth

I’m so glad I found you and your series, as I am trying to transform the way I think about and deal with food. Thank you for this reminder:

“Truth is: that’s EXACTLY the things God concerns himself with. He concerns himself with the number of hairs on our head and today’s color of our eyes. He concerns himself with the condition of my heart and the way I give it away for a bite of something sweet.”

I’m taking your cue and working on trusting God in this more and trying less to manage it all on my end.

Glad to have you with me, Liz. It really is remarkable to know how intimately God knows us and wants to meet with us. This discovery has been a super bonus to my journey this month.

I loved your words today, Beth. SO very grateful for this reminder that God does care about the details. He is in tune with the very bites of food we put into our mouths. This food issue is a spiritual issue, because it directly affects the temple in which He dwells. I am so inspired by your dedication to see this through. God bless you!

I’m very glad I found your blog! I, too, know that God is in the little things. I pray that we will be more attuned to His voice and readily obedient.
